I wonder if thin rounds would be easier. In they are thin and partially cut, a blow from a hammer might shear/split the round in half. Ripping takes a lot of times. Definitely a job for a respirator.

Correct, red oak is heavy when alive. I think I can get to the 4" diameter branches with a decent rope angle. There are enough targets that smaller is better.

Sounds rad, B. And like type 2 fun, if at all! As one grows older, thine ego shrinks a lot it seems to me. So if I finish it will be a thrill but to give it a try and see what happens is the main interest.

I would go with no face undercut and matching top cut to make it lay flat, preferably with a saw bigger than 201.

Not a fan. Triangle works just as well. Can still have tons of fibre pull past that curf cut on the sides. Tear out no bueno.bueno.Worked fine that time on that species. Alls well that lands well.

M and I once were "forced" to retreat from a pretty cold and wet late summer snowstorm in the Idaho Sawtooth backcountry...on one of our long backpacking trips. That was 18 miles, full backpacks, snow/sleet/rain. Fording a swollen icy Queens River waist deep five times...the last carrying a 55...

    How'd it go today?

Canopy raised and thinned five smallish/medium silvers and back Wednesday to butcher four large boxelder trees. Heavy lean towards the house, not in the best of shape, should be removed but they are park trees leaning over the lot line so cut back to the lot line and let them bush out.

@Bodean I'm going to sign up for a 50k in Maine in September, it's on trails and it's apparently steep. I'd be very surprised if I finished it but I'm psyched to be involved with an ultra and to see how far I make it, likely mostly my hiking/walking. The 25 mile cutoff is at 9 hrs. The farthest...
