Ash surprise. Had an oak do that once, right next to a house. On a hill above it. We had the butt tied in case. Good this, as what was left of the roots would have been happy to roll the whole bloody mess down the hill to the side of the structure. Light on my feet that day.

Desert environments bury their lines more shallow than areas that can have frost. Some of our water mains were not all that far below the sidewalk.
