Woodpecker Damage on Silver Maple...Should We Remove

Since the power line or previous topping (reduction) seems to be a likely cause of the internal decay and rot, it's almost certain that any amount of reduction will trigger more rot and decline. Given the location around power and building along with the cavity and decay and wounds, that tree...

    Redwood Coast 2015 & 2016

Recently sold a Canon 5DSR for a Canon R5 so that my camera body controls match. It's been a few months and I finally tried the R5 in Jedediah Smith park. This is the father of a family I met in the Grove of Titans yesterday afternoon.

Thanks folks. Mainly stayed inside enjoying air conditioning on my birthday, and installed a pickup inside my small redwood top acoustic guitar in the afternoon. Cheers !

    Official Guns Thread

Bud's Guns, for example, has the compacts for $247 w/ free shipping and $239 if "cash" paid. And apparently a rebate off that amount, plus 3 x magazines. There would be a tranfer fee in the $30 range, but that may even less money if the rebate is off Bud's listed prices.

I may buy the Smith & Wesson 460 magnum revolver. Taurus makes some too but even though Taurus is a lot less expensive, I like the stainless finish of the Smith & Wesson offerings. The Smith & Wesson 500 mag is technically more powerful, but just slightly at the muzzle and the two are a...

    Official Guns Thread

Just bought one of those also a couple months ago right after the Charter 38 revolver I posted above. It shot fairly tight at the indoor range, and that was my first time firing in about 6 years. I'm just getting back into the rythym of learning and practice again. I was ruminating buying a 2nd...

    Official Guns Thread

For revolvers, I bought and kept a nice compact one a couple months ago. Handled nice at the range too. Charter Arms 38 Blue Diamond. I practice with normal stuff, but store it with Underwood Extreme Defender +P which are about 1300 fps and 375 ft. lbs. The rounds are an external hollowpoint...

    Official Guns Thread

So I ordered a Smith & Wesson 686 Plus 357 for a nice extra revolver, based on many good reviews. Sorry, but what arrived pooped on S&W's reputation. The gun store owner quickly pointed out unusual swirl blemishes on the left barrel and the cylinder barely opened. I sent is back, and after the...

    Drying eucalyptus

Related to what I posted about guitar wood, apparently wood for instruments can be torrefied. I think it removes some oils. The process uses heat but it's also in a chamber where oxygen is removed. Not sure how that would work for wood used to turn on a lathe.

    Drying eucalyptus

Related to wood harvesting or curing, I've been watching a lot of Luthiers on Youtube the past few month. It's interesting to hear about different woods, how they grade them, store them, even age them sometimes beyond the storage of whomever they purchased from. I hope to purchase a redwood top...

What's the weather like in your neck of the woods?

Glad the 100 to 114 degree week went by the way side. Our air conditioner works good though. Humidity was higher than usual right after for a few days. Sometimes how cool summer mornings are means more to me than the afternoon temps. When it's cool at night, the afternoon heat feels short.

    The Official Happy Birthday thread!!!

Thank you. Spent a relaxed and mellow birthday after a short 3 hours removing several Phitzer junipers. But was done and into air conditioning by 11:30am. Went out to have Sushi for a birthday meal. Then reclined at home Anyhow, health feels good, and looking forward to another steady year.

    Zubat pole saw "hook"?

I don't use a Silky pole saw, but have a fiberglass set with hook. The hook as a primary hook to pull with a small secondary to push. For trees like honey locust that snag on themselves, I pull limbs free. For other if the limb does not fall clean, then it can get pushed with the smaller hook.

Springboards -- these DYI or standard design ??

The split in the end has me wondering if there's a purpose, Somewhat like the end of a prybar. Could this be a springboard and tool combo?
