You are correct, the Knut H shown is for use with the HHs, the hitch can be used alone, but I trap the right eye under the bottom section of rope, could also go under just the next section up, or both of the bottom sections.

The correct name for the hitch shown in the HHFX instructions is the Knut H. The Catalan was shown to be the same as the Arbsession Hitch, which came out many years before, and for some reason the Catalan name was transferred to the Knut H by Mumford.

I used the Penberthy method below, but the knot book I got it from didn’t specify if it was a single or double eye hitch. I choose two eyes, worked fairly well, but the pseudo-Bowline would tighten up causing it to start to slip. Neat idea to make it a loop!

Very nice, except for the friction hitch suggestion. A true Michoacán has the legs coming out the sides, and they shift to the back when tied on the dog bone. This pulls the dogbone more straight up, instead of into the rope, with the carabiner making more of the friction.

I reduce and taper the core tail before burying, and only half way, then make a few short buries, dropping a strand each time.

I think the top wrap being able to create enough friction to get the rest of the wraps to stretch and separate, and in turn start to squeeze the rope, is comparable to the top bollard on mechanicals. That article is a couple years old with no new additions, guess no new friction hitches have...
