Your big toe is an important balancing unit.
Keeping it separate makes walking on logs and uneven ground way easier.
Richard walked up a windblown tree last year wearing those spiked tabis, Jay sent us.
 
There is an old method of rope climbing that uses the toes to grasp the rope...I have personally seen a very athletic fellow martial artist climb about 30 feet up a 3 strand manila, 1/2" rope using hands and toes...rope goes between big toe and next toe. He was very fast.

Yeah, big toe. Tabis are great in that they allow foot flexibility. Also light on your feet and very comfortable. Great grip. A few different types, also with toe protection inserts. Stephen, if you catch this post, I haven't forgotten about sending you a pair, but for one dumb reason or another haven't gotten to it. Promise..promise.
