Secured vs. Tied In

Salmon Arm, sweet! I love that country up there, bigger trees!

Oh, and this makes sense to me...I almost always feel more secure when I've got a self rescue system ready before a cut. As Gerry once said, it is a battle against the odds, anything you can do to stack them in your favour...

Makes a case for a written risk assessment before work. I try and do one for each job, repeat jobs get an extra look around to see if anything has changed and a date update. On it you can detail the work plan given the parameters of the site, the work and the tools you are using, so IF something goes pear-shaped, you at least have a reference for the decisions you made based on the risks you assessed.
Difficulties arise if you have to make a judgement call while up the tree, hard to amend a written risk assessment from 60'...but then, at least you have a proveable track record of a safety culture.
