Fishing 2016

I fished up in Saskatchewan, at least I think it was still in the province, having slept in the camper all night while getting to the spot. A river is a river up there, some serious moving water. It just wasn't a good season to catch fish. :(

I wish I recall the location, Willard. I know that it was an area where the native people have certain fishing rights that others don't have. Yes, i could see that an ill prepared person could easily get into trouble on a river system like what they have up there. Water wide and deep and well moving. My friend that I went with is experienced as a fisherman and hunter, he lived in Saskatoon.

Try and catch more fish now and cut less timber.:D
That's my motto. Willard, we use the gps extensively in the Bay and Gulf to mark and revisit waypoints and navigating at night or in foggy conditions. We just fished the same wreck 26 miles offshore two days in a row. Simple for us now but impossible sixty years ago. Marine navigation and sonar has come a long way in our lifetime. My first bottom machine (sonar) was a paper machine that burned marks on a roll of paper that passed across the screen. Extremely primitive compared to todays' electronics. The new 4 stroke outboards are great machines too. You'll probably double crank yours a time or two because you can't hear it running.

Those fish finders are a mixed blessing. You can see them down there but they might not be biting...makes for frustrating. Sometimes it's what that big thing? :\:

It happened to us this week Jay. We were marking a ton of fish on a spot, caught a couple of snapper and they turned off. Being it was the last stop of the day and I had a diver friend on board, he went over the side and confirmed what we already knew.
The GPS is a blessing and a curse too. It took many years to find some of my fishing holes in the Gulf but some yahoo can run up to you while you're anchored, push a button and he's instantly got your waypoint. With all the technology, there are not many "secret spots" inside of 30 miles.

Ray, what is the current range of GPS plus or minus in getting you in proximity to a programed point? I once heard that there was a certain amount of built in lack of precision, perhaps to do with security or the military or something.

Pete, that would likely be up north in Hokkaido. Brown Bears up that way as well, but they've done a pretty decent job of keeping the bears from knowing that humans often have tasty things to eat, other than the humans themselves.

Willard that Humminbird is both in one. You can use it split screen to have both features side by side and only need one transducer which is very convenient and space saving. Mounting transducers can be tricky, to get signal while under way you can't have any turbulence or air bubbles flowing under it at all. Never done it on a pontoon.

Some get to keep on fishing when my vacation ended. My dad, son and family friend hitting the lake in MI.

What's Bass like if you want to eat one? The only recipe I know for that fish is drinking Rainier Ale when trying to catch one.

If we eat one. Fry with egg cornmeal etc or deep fry beer batter.

These made this one year for supper.

Day 2. Son tried to keep totals. Day 2 yielded a total of 42 fish. 32 smallmouth, 3 largemouth, 2 perch, 2 Rock bass, 1 northern pike, one channel cat and one white bass.. Catfish weighed 9lb 12oz, gpa got a 4.5 lb smallmouth, randy a 3lb 12oz smallmouth, and my personal best 3.5 lb smallmouth.

I will just pull a few pics again.

I dont, son and dad dont. = Weighted hook.

I will ask dad when they come back how Randy rigs his.

I was thinking of trying that wacky rig though. Just to see myself.

Those are some crazy looking worms. The whacky rig is a killer technique on largemouths, never caught a smallie but hopefully will get on some spotted bass in north Georgia next month.

I forgot to post a few pics from sons fishing trip. Day 3 morning fishing before they headed back on the road south. They just had to wet those lures a few more times.
Son said he got skunked.

Ran offshore with some friends for a little snapper action today. We caught most of them on fairly light spinning tackle, which is a blast. A really nice day on the Gulf, the weather was gorgeous and the fellowship outstanding. IMG_2146.jpg IMG_2149.jpg IMG_2144.jpg IMG_2187.jpg
