I did one last weekend.
Always hate to see those go, they are such beautiful trees.

Yeah me too, but as you can see it had a pretty bad fungal infection, and apparently a few years back the homeowner added 6 inches of topsoil to the yard so the lawnmowers wouldn't hit the surface roots. same thing happened to the sycamore in this other pic. CB.jpg Giant sycamore.jpg
 
Out of curiousity, what was the crane brought in for as opposed to just whackin it apart? Was the lawn a concern?

yeah the lawn was partial concern, pipes and what not. The weight was an issue to get the trunk onto the log truck. 12,500lbs. but I think mostly it was because of time. the job was over an hour away, and it was faster to do it with a crane.
