    Bridge failure in Ann Arbor

The reporter probably got the details from a police report, which probably got the detail wrong or wasn't detailed enough.

Was it coming from a substation? Might have been air blast switches.

    How many volts???

If that's in the LA area, SCE uses a lot of 12 kV distribution. Some lower (4160) and some higher (16.5 and 33 kV). The higher off the ground the more deadly is how I view it. And then there's really high voltage that does freaky stuff, like this. http://youtu.be/hIkNY5xjy5k

    How many volts???

That's going to vary from utility to utility. Standard residential/commercial distribution system here is 4800 V with some 13.2 kV in the outer suburbs.

What's the weather like in your neck of the woods?

Took this snapshot of traffic speeds on Google Maps last night. That winter storm had traffic snarled across the the entire upper Midwest.

    TreeStuff - APTA - Wow!

I was using a Harrison 14 oz, which was a snug fit and not as aerodynamic as a Weaver premium. Maybe that's why? Or maybe the pressure gage is off. Shooting nearly straight up. No throwline connected - I was just trying it out for the first time, not setting up a climb. I'll try a few more...

    TreeStuff - APTA - Wow!

I just came home from the local bike shop with an AirTool HP. 180 psi. $49. Probably cheaper options but I'm lazy. I mean, I got an APTA after all. Played in the yard with it briefly. 42 pumps to get 180 psi, which propelled a 14 oz weight with no throwline attached, straight up ~ 110-115'...

Lower atmospheric pressure means lower pressure inside the cylinder and less chance of pre-ignition (knocking).

    Drone for Christmas

How well does it handle wind? Is there a wind speed limitation? Is it as steady in a gusty breeze?

    Drone for Christmas

The 500' rule can be found here: http://www.flightsimaviation.com/data/FARS/part_91-119.html It's more about safety than privacy. Don't know what, if any, rules apply to drones.

87 octane versus ethanol in gas

^ This is what I've read as well. Ethanol's theoretical octane number is quoted as being anywhere from 108-115, so it is used to boost the octane rating of gasoline. A lot of gasoline produced at refineries is around 84-85 octane. Ethanol is added at the local terminal when filling the delivery...

Time for a new Silky. Fixed, straight. But which one?

Any rule of thumb for how long a blade should be in relation to limb diameter? Or a diameter range for a given blade length?
