I bought myself a new(used) lens last week. I love it, but it hurt the wallet bad. Oh well, about 6 or 7 grand more and I'll be done for a while...;)

A post I made on the "Other Site":


I have had a couple of 28" NOS McCulloch sprocket nose bars hanging around for a while. I decided that I would modify one to fit my SP125C so that I could do some work to my 36" bar. The 28" bar was originally made to fit the saws that include the 10-10, PM700, 610, etc. The slot on that bar is .320" wide (5/16" nominal). The slot on the large mount bars is .390" (3/8" nominal). A trip to the Bridgeport was in order.



After using two heel clamps to secure the bar to the table, I used an edge finder to locate the center of the slot.

The tool that I used was a .375" 4-flute solid carbide end mill. Bar steel is very tough. It can be cut with high speed steel, but your surface speed must be much lower than with carbide. One pass down the center, then a .007" pass up each side set the width at .39"

Because the tail on the smaller bar is more narrow than the large bar I had to modify a set of spacer plates so that the chain rivets would not drag on the larger bar plates. After scribing the profile from the small bar, the plates were shaped on a belt sander. You can see the size difference between the stock plate and the narrowed plate in the pictures.

I ordered a new square ground Oregon chain, along with an 8 tooth sprocket, from Bailey's and that gave me everything I needed. It all went together without a hitch.

Gorgeous piece of glass! I used to have an older MF model.

Just stay out of the studio or 6-7 grand won't even be a drop in the bucket.

Bjørn Rørslett knows his business. His review of the lens is one of the things that made me go for it. There was no way I was going to afford the VRII @ $2200, and the VRI is generally judged not as sharp wide open as the AF-S is. I will mainly shoot motorsports with it so the VR is not that impotant. The money saved will go to buy teleconverters...:)

I know I'm in for a rough ride. I got to use my friends 300mm f/2.8 AF-S to shoot roadracing last summer.

300 2.8 ED MF is my main sports lens.

Yeah, you could say that..I haven't been the last couple of years, but I have been there almost every year since 1984. I have had some great times at that track!

In case you haven't been there, join fredmiranda.com Plenty of sellers with good feedback and reputations.

However, in replacing my stolen gear this summer, I found a very good Canon 300 IS for $3300...on ebay...... the rest of the gear, I purchased new...well save for 2 teleconvertors....

Nice F5!! what a workhorse!! Do you have or are you getting a digi body? The D7000 sounds quite the stellar camera.

The daylight shots here http://www.flickr.com/photos/rbtree/sets/72157625331221297/show/ were with my 1D Mk 11 and my old non IS 300, and stacked teleconvertors..giving 1096 mm ( I think, but those were a few years ago--I may have only had the 2x on, which only degrades the prime lens (alone) image a tad.

The night shot is a tad soft....shot with my 7D, I think, and the new IS 300 with stacked tele's.. That's 1350 effective mm

Beautiful moon shots Roger!

My DSLR is a D2Xs. Kind of old, but it still gives decent IQ in good light. I got it for $1500, only 970 clicks on the odometer!

I live close enough north of there, you can here racing on a clear day.
 
I have the AFS Nikkor 18-200mm lens. Old D100 body.
