My buddy is installing the lift pump which apprently suddenly went out yesterday on the job.
You could feel it barely moving , but producing nothing but bubbles.
Ive heard this could damage the main injector pump.
Anybody heard this ?

If his Cummins is a 24 valve, (1999-2002) with the VP44 injection pump, low fuel pressure will damage it. A replacement VP44 is around $1400. A VP44 will usually need replacing around 110K miles, right after the 100K mile Cummins warranty runs out.

I just assumed it was on a truck. Chippers usually have the mechanical injection pump like the 12 valve truck engines.

We are pumping white smoke, Yo.
Im about to put some charge to her butt got fuel at injectors fo sho...

Yup starving the injector pump of fuel/lubrication can take them out. Best to periodically change the lift pump. Yaa one more maintenance item:O

just spent some bucks on my 350, fuel pump and two injectors, wire harness to injectors.....blah , blah. As soon as the truck hit 2400rpms it blew smoke. fuel pump was dying

By the time the LP goes, you may have already cooked the VP. 70% or the fuel pumped by the LP is for cooling. Once primed, the VP will pull enough fuel to run at full power, until it cooks itself. If you don't have any codes, and no loss of power, or other intermittent symptoms, you are probably ok. My '99 is showing P0216, and P1641, the LP died, and now I need a VP as well. I'm probably going to get a FASS or a Walbro LP, they are much better than the Carter stockers. A fuel gauge is also a good idea, or you can put a 5 psi oil pressure switch in one of the bleeders on top of the filter housing, and a light on the dash. If the light comes on under load, your LP is shot.

A fuel pressure gauge is an absolute must on these engines. Anything less than 8 under load is cause for worry or if no codes, then time to change the fuel filter. I put in a FASS fuel pump and a fuel pressure gauge two weeks after I got my truck. It has 15 psi on idle and drops to about 10 psi under load.

If you are getting a rebuilt VP44 for $975, that is cheap.

Replaced my lift pump on an 01 cummins just in time a few years ago. If you have to replace the LP get it from cummins, it cost me $65 from them and Dodge wanted over $250. Cummins even threw in a relocation kit cause they knew guys were moving them back on the frame. Easiest way to replace is take the front drivers side tire off, bend the wheel well out and it'll be right there. Fuel gauge is a must.

Funny this thread came up.

Spent about 4 hours stuck with the F350 today, after the lift pump (electric) crapped out. About a 5 minute job, really.

***Great big thanks to Newfie, for coming and helping out! And for the return trip after the new one from the store was DOA out-of-the-box.***

We got lift pump in, Took an hour.
Tons of fule at injectors.
White stinky smoke , Ruff idle.
I think its something eletrical what was it IMS.
Its so weird.
We bleed it and bledd it .
Everything checks out .
Pour diesel mixed with gas and she purks up then idles then dies.
I cracked all the lines, I think the pump is not getting enough juice but it got dark and cold and was in a bad spot so its now at SE diesel.

Pull the cap off of the radiator and see if the coolant "pulses". If it does, you done blew a head gasket.

i lost my first lift pump a few years ago under warrenty and it threw the injection pump death code, dodge replaced LP abd reset codes and the IP hasnt missed a beat since. LP was dying a year ago so ijust ordered FASS, and threw away the old low pressure system. 95 GPH to the IP now!

Probably more like 6 or 7 hours by the time you got home. I learned a few things today, mostly clerks in auto parts stores can be morons.

with all the white smoke you probably want to check the codes again:( vp44 may be shot now
