As far as the swing Dutchman goes I've come to pretty clear understand understanding that it's better used on smaller trees with less mass. When you take the far corner out of the hinge on a heavy tree it's almost certainly gonna settle down into that empty space of the kerf. not so with a...

Agreed 100% Kenny... and here's the thing... I would have never been on track to my present understanding without YOU and Dent... Because you tenaciously pointed to Dent's work and related it to other aspects of tree work. (like swinging the limb into the rigging etc) in a way that I would never...

Your buddy Bernham just put a post up stating that he sees no difference in function between a humboldt and a conventional for topping large conifers, then went on the attack with personal insults. He never wants to talk trees though. Because every time he argues with me, he makes a fool of...

you've got a clue DMc... speak to the technical aspects of tree cutting in this conversation, if you have somthing to say... Your criticisms of personality are projections of your own arrogance, or you wouldn't get so triggered. Here's an example of taking tops out where the Humboldt is a life...

I have repeatedly credited you in earlier threads with bringing the information about Dent's changes on the swing Dutchman as first-hand knowledge. I have never claimed to have any first-hand knowledge on the matter. I said "it's clear". I didn't say Dent told me, or make any indication that I...

There are a lot of reasons why the Humboldt is prefered in loggin scenarios. One of the main ones is what you have described above. When the but slides off the stump and hits the ground before the top, there is far less tendencey to crack the log, thus preserving timber value.

It's imporetant to understand that those in positions to train others in a field as dangerous as logging or arboriculture have to be conservative in order to avoid liability. It's clear that Dent changed his teachings on techniques such as the swing Dutchman becasue it was too "unreliabel to...

The change in your tone is much appreciated... I actually love to discuss and disect the finer points of tree work in an intelligent conversation. A little respect goes a long way. Differences in practices are often the result of different topgraphy and tree species, and size, as well as market...

your statement about stump shot " keeps the force of the falling tree from sliding out the back door and off the stump" while correct does not indicate knowledge about the times that may be necessary and the times it may not. In the vast majority of suburban backyard falling scenarios, more...

A 5 foot stub isn't a hat rack! And target pruning is not based on the evolution of a tree. It is based on the need to preserve wood value in timber. Shigo started as a forester. If you look at all the early papers he wrote many included "decay and discoloration" in their titles...

well there it is right there... they didn't teach you that in college did they? You're not even close, you don't understand the why, you don't understand the physics, and I do! you want a narrow face.. check this one out... this was published in 2011.. there has never been, before or since, the...

Let's get this straight... the point I was trying to make is that the money I make from Youtube is insignificant to me. It would take over three years of youtube $ to equal the money I made in just one day of grinding stumps a couple of weeks back. And nothing I have said in this thread or any...

OK, so explain to us the reason for Stumpshot, as that's what got this derail going... why is it used and what are the pros and cons that might affect when and how much to use? How much stump shot do you use? do you always shoot for a consistent amount or do you vary it depending on the...

That's been a huge problem with arboriculture in the US for decades. The so-called experts that set the standards are looking to loggers as the ones to learn from and adhering to their standards etc. It's a much different game and for example, many of the hazards that exist in the woods are...

nd Mr Collins please answer the question: DO you understand the "why" of your tried and trusted methods, or are you just doing as you were taught without a complete understanding of the many factors involved?

I make about 125/month in revenue sharing from youtube. A week ago Wednesday we broke a record and did 4,970 with 2 men, and 33K in the first 2 weeks of August. The only time I recall correcting Jerry is when he thought I was plunge cutting for the camera on the below video (that was in another...
