It ain’t fun either. Used rope just takes more time and is frustrating. One thing I’ve found is that having more line before your cleat is better. It seems that having more cover to work with helps final bury.
I find hard lay makes a nicer splice. I melt the strand ends and that seems to help keep the twist twisted. Sometimes on a tough tuck I’ll put the end in the vise pull it nice and proper.
Is it possible the sling was getting over loaded?
The destruction tests I’ve seen the whipping is the first thing to break. And a good bit before the splice fails.
