How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

I think there is some hope for getting green Euc to hinge. Down here I have no hope of anything dead hinging.

@Burnham mainly just hold/guide longer instead of snapping immediately. Slowing would be nice…

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

Yes...do you think the thickness improves the pulling/hinging time? Talking to an eastern faller buddy, he said hinge thickness is actually kind of species specific, not just diameter. Makes sense. As difficult as it is to split, I doubt it's very prone to 'chair, haha.

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

It’s a bit on the thick side as well. I have been trying to make hinges tall and thin so they flex and they just break. Perhaps thicker with more area to compress and pull is the ticket. Tree was winched over.

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

Was looking for an old post and found this I had forgotten about. This ironbark is the only Euc I have ever cut that hinged well. I’m wondering if it just the species or the low back cut creating more pull. @Trains @Bermy @gf beranek ? 🤔 Thanks

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

Yes, I usually do too. The physics of it is super interesting to me. With a high back cut, the falling part of the tree will split away vertically from the remaining part of the tree. Once it splits, it falls faster I would think. Hinge below that may or may not still be attached. The way mine...

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

Efficiency! The tree is already up, if we cut it down, we have to pick it back up! I recently got to go cut down real trees in the forest…I gotta check if I posted that.

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

This pink flowering eucalyptus actually hinged really well. Could hear it for a long time into the duration of the fall. I kinda wish I had tried the triple hinge. First time I’ve tried an open block face. @Burnham don’t worry, the 20’ F700 and 16’ trailer that I winched the tree onto are...

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

Stumping this euc mucked up my chain. Doesn’t seem to be an issue…yet. I have a bunch of biguns to drop this winter though…

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

@Trains thanks! That’s purty much what I figgered! Next experiment: swing large dead euc 180° on a string from the back of a 6x6! Haha!

I didn't try any funky cuts, but green euc doesn't hinge for doodly!

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

My driver was a little slow but the weight was right. Recouping from heat exhaustion until tomorrow am I reckon. Gotta got unload the tree off the F700.

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

I think the guy who popularized the shark gill on YT said that one of it’s benefits and main reasons he used it was due to the gradual vertical fiber pulling slowing the fall, usually on trees pulled 180 from lean. My theoretical purpose was to have a thicker hinge that would still bend, but...

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

Thanks @gf beranek The euc poles I brought home were too dry and didn’t hinge for anything. The only slight hope I found was the idea I discussed in my introductory thread. A very tall/open face and multiple back cuts to make multiple or a longer hinge. My issue tonight was that I was pulling...

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

That euc is scheduled for this Saturday. I brought some euc poles home to experiment with increasing hinge flexibility/time with. I think the triple/gill is more for slowing down a pulled tree. I think it would have been interesting on that recent thread for the hard leaner that was...

How well does green eucalyptus hinge?

@gf beranek I think the “inventor” also made the point that the fiber pull slows the fall. @SeanKroll thanks for all the info! 24” x48” calibrated measuring trash can… so no 42” I don’t think. That much tree on that small of a brittle trunk requires caution methinks. More pics next time I’m...
