I would advise on making a schnapps flask an essential addition to your belt.

Is that a hip flask full of schnapps you're holding there Stig? Nice waistcoat too.

Good point chris. As I said, I thoroughly enjoyed the video, and my comment was just in passing. At the end of the day, they might be totally wrong and inefficient, but they have a damn sight more iron and business than I will ever have, so kudos to them.

Old Irish, I did say a Harvester / Forwarder team. in such an operation, the brash goes under the machine to create the road.

It was just an observation Squish. I might be wrong. But I know mechanised harvesting really well, and I know that operation was flawed. Hell, they had a big excavator there with a Waratah head doing noting but delimbing and a single crosscut. If they worked that at the face of the operation you...

Plenty of pole length operations still in Europe. Harvesters will happily cut pole length (or in the case of that operation, truck length), and clam bunk forwarders pull them out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCeewSaDXQg

I reckon a Harvester / Forwarder combination would be faster.

Loved watching that vid, but couldn't help but feel the whole operation was over machined. A harvester will cut, delimb, grade and stack in 1 operation. An 8 wheel drive forwarder will take the material right to the trucks and load them if needs be. Work on the worst of ground without needing a...

Chainsaw work. To big for a harvester. Im just doing a deal right now for a 200hp Franklin treefarmer grapple skidder. I'll probably use a forwarder for all the firewood material though.

The logs arent to bad, but must of the tree fork into multi stems at about 10m. Given that they are 43m tall, that leaves a lot of topwood.

Hard to say. There is a very high proportion of firewood in this lot, as they weren't really close grown enough.

We took the decision to extract at a slow and steady pace rather than put the job off. It's going surprisingly well to be honest, and once the crop is cut, I can get the trucks right down to where the timber is stacked.

Field full of crop in the way. Current lack of large skidder. We'll get there :)

Logs / Sawlogs / logwood Is an old forestry term for lengths of round timber destined for sawmilling purposes. Totally different meaning to firewood logs. We also cut specific sizes for Pallet, firewood and biomass chip.
