Yes I'd consider it a hardwood, just like poplar and willow. By no means desirable, but I've always thought deciduous = hardwood, coniferous = softwood. It's not a good firewood, but will keep the house warm without a chimney fire if you don't mind feeding the stove every 3 hours.
