    Wiki says the byproduct is acetylene, heat, and calcium hydroxide. Calcium hydroxide has a lot of uses, so I don't know what the issue is.

    The salesman at the welding store didn't say, just that there was some sort of toxic slurry left over from making the gas. Is there anything left in the lamps?

    There is a byproduct to making acetylene and it costs a lot to deal with. Haven't filled a torch tank in years, but it was $140. :O Stands to reason that carbide would be harder to get also.

    No carbide lamps, but have run across acetylene generators for houses. Usually placed in a part of the yard you can afford to have explode from time to time.

    I had a couple of white gas Colemans. Left one at a friend's cabin after a party in about '97. Haven't been back to retreive it. The other is probably at my parent's house. I've got a few propane ones now, but the Milwaukee M18 lantern will go days on a big battery, and it's got a USB...
