i use a weighted throw line to find bottom and depth to water.
It's easier when you already have pipe in it and can just use pipe length as you pull the pump to be cleaned etc
Remove cap, get a sample and have it tested. Often your local health dept can do it. But if you want to be quieter about it, labs can be looked up. You also need to establish well depth, water head depth, and if it was lined. Wells can be lined with a proper pipe and such.
