    Bird Watching!

I remember when I was about 7 and scared a Blue Heron up off our creek. I was quite convinced it was a prehistoric monster. About the same year I found a large northern pike on the shore that was just bones. It had quite a mouthful of teeth. Looked like an alligator to me. Kid imagination.

After some research I think they were Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers.

    Bird Watching!

Saw a flock of woodpeckers the other morning. In the afternoon in the same spot there was a flock of swallows. Must be a meeting spot. The barn swallows have been gone for weeks. Cliff or Tree maybe.

Now that most of the birds have gone south it seems pretty quiet around here. I miss them.

My wing is broken!! Yeah, killdeers are cool birds. Red Wings were really early this year. Early to mid March. Barn swallows were a little late. Waiting out the storms perhaps. The pattern was earlier every year. I was getting concerned when they were late. The word is that birds are...

I saw a blue heron here Saturday. I thought they would have headed south already. When I was a kid and saw the first one take off I thought I had seen a living dinosaur.

I bet the early ones come back ahead of time to stake claim to the best nests. I find it entertaining that Mom and the young ones head South and a group stays behind. I can picture them saying go ahead- we will meet you down there- You guys travel way to slow for us.

I thought so also. I wait for them to come back and watch for them closely. A few come back first and they aren't very obvious if you don't watch for them. They are coming and leaving 2 weeks earlier than they did 15-20 years ago.

    Bird Watching!

I stopped on the side of the road to look at what I thought was turkeys in a old corn field. I was looking into the sun at them so it was hard to make out detail. It was a group of turkey vultures. I could see in the sun that they are constantly dripping saliva. Made them even uglier somehow.

    Bird Watching!

Red Wings have been the sign of spring for me here since I was a kid. They have been back for two weeks. I get kind of tired of the Robins songs and I used to wish we had Baltimore Orioles more, till we had a bunch. They get repetitious.

    Bird Watching!

I usually like to walk the creek that runs through our property in the winter. I have seen lots of cool birds in the past doing that. This winter, as well as last, the snow is so deep I have not been able to do it. I hear the Great Horned Owls back there hooting.

Barn Swallows always look and sound like they could not be happier, except when they are tweet tweeting you to chase you off their babies. They will dive you coming up from behind and tweet tweet as they are passing over. I have been known to toss my cap overhead if they are persistent enough...

    Bird Watching!

I wish I had a CD of bird calls. I have been hearing a familiar night bird song. Kinda hard to identify. I read Mockingbirds sing at night. It makes a single tweet followed by a twitter.

    Bird Watching!

I had a bird fluttering around the window in my shop trying to get out. I left the door open thinking it would find its way out. No good. I reached over the bench to try to slide the window open. Couldn't get it. So I snagged the bird to carry it out. I thought it was a sparrow but it...

I heard my first Baltimore Oriole this morning. We have a lot more of them than we used to. They come back later than most and feast on tree pollen making very happy noises.

I saw one yesterday driving. It was out in a corn field that had been chopped. We don't seem to have as many as we used to. I like to go for a bicycle ride around the block (4 or 5 miles) every once in a while. It is surprising what you miss when driving.

Killdeers like bare dirt to make their nest. You can look at the eggs and not see them they are so well camoed. I love their "i have a broken wing" act.

    Bird Watching!

We use to have pheasants here in abundance. Beautiful to see and good hunting/eating. Very few around now. We do have turkeys now. We had a pair of flickers around last weekend. They seem to just stop on their way through. The barn swallows are back. I love to see them return and really...
