I have many hundreds of hours using the small broad axe. The Collins did a lot of chopping before the handle sheared off. Chopping white oak joists takes it's toll on man and tool. The short 3 1/2 # was a perk from a former boss. One of my instructors said a short handled axe was ideal for...

Axes. Broken 3 1/2# is my favorite, a Collins Legitimus. Small broad axe has an elm handle.

Hickory, especially dry, is not fun to work. I reshape all my axe handles so they don't blow out my elbows.

Break out the shaving horse and whittle one out!

I think all John Deere dealers carry Stihl.

I saw some replacement handles for $40. Not sure they are a match... I used an Ochsenkopf maul once, probably the nicest I've used.

Are the Stihl mauls made by Ochsenkopf? They are available in hickory.

Sad to see the butt mashed on that axe. My favorite axe, a Collins Legitimus, still has the 3 1/2 visible, and I feel lucky that it, too, hasn't been mashed. I should go to the garage and put the new handle on it.

3 1/2 pound Collins Legitimus. My favorite axe. My handles get reduced to about 5/8"x1-1/8". One minute of chopping with a standard handle, and the shaving horse, draw knife, and spokeshave come out. The sledge handle is a new 8# that was halfway through driving it's first wedge when it sheared...

I sheared the handle off my scoring, joinery axe. Broke clean across right at the head. I've never seen that before.

My statement was based on seeing people trying to split hardwoods in half, mostly on YouTube, so the softwood thing really didn't enter into it. You don't have to watch someone split very long to know if they know what they are doing. I bet there is more softwood used for heating globally. The...

Fair point. I haven't split much softwood for firewood.

I've seen, but have never tried one. I give the maul a twist, and you can usually keep the chunk upright. I always work the outside on a big chunk. Not sure why you would try to bust a 24" round in half. Unless it was ash and it was 0* outside. :/: My new favorite maul is the Stihl/Ochsenkopf. I...
