Replaceable cutters on saw chain (Chain-Sert)

Thanks, Randy, i wasn't aware that diamond could be trued up. I wonder if my diamond wheel that i purchased from Bailey's a long time ago can be? My impression is that the diamond particulate is quite thin. It definitely doesn't wear as fast as the other regular abrasive wheels for the same...

Replaceable cutters on saw chain (Chain-Sert)

No matter the thickness of the diamond coating, am I correct in saying that the wheels don't really change their profiles via wear, in the normal sense that we think of regular softer abrasives? A changing profile I think would be detrimental for most tooling that diamond abrasives are intended...

Yes, they are around, and small little round diamond abrasives that go on the portable grinders, like the Granberg.

I believe that diamond wheels would be preferable for carbide over the green abrasive, possibly except for cost. Diamond wheels don't change their profile by wear, the way the green does. Truing up with the softer wheel isn't a big deal, but exactitude is lost. I think that is a very positive...

Replaceable cutters on saw chain (Chain-Sert)

My conventional chain grinder will sharpen carbide, I just have to put on the diamond wheel. The wheel was a costly item way back when. I was more thinking that perhaps the design of the tooth or possible interference from the part that holds the cutter, would make sharpening prohibitive.

Willard, I wasn't responding to your post, just the general question whether the replaceable cutters on the chain could be sharpened by the user or not, and by conventional, I meant with a diamond wheel. Though I am still kind of confused, I'm guessing no.

Must have missed something.... Those inserts can be sharpened by conventional methods?

Replaceable cutters on saw chain (Chain-Sert)

There sure are differnt grades of carbide. The brazed stuff that I purchased from Baileys, hitting large rocks or even small rocks regularly, would dull it rather quick. Longer lasting than regular chain, however. Nothing like a dull chain that is slow to cut with to begin with. :|: In...

Replaceable cutters on saw chain (Chain-Sert)

I still have a bunch of carbide chain. With the brazed variety I have, by the time you get to the end of the life of the chain, it will usually have lost one or more cutters. A relatively slow cutting chain as well.

Other parts of a chain wear too. Have to question whether replacing just the cutters is a good idea.
