Could be some sort of rust fungus considering the rust color.

Why Are Laminated Bars Less Durable?

The welds can break, and there's overall less structural integrity when there are 3 layers spot welded together in only a few places.

Why Are Laminated Bars Less Durable?

I think Oregon had an aluminum core layer in light weight laminated bars. I've seen the laminations start to separate on one.

Well, California has a lot of saints (cities named for them, though they don't live up to the names). Any city name with San means saint, and then there's The Angels

    Wood stove heat

I just burn fires differently now, and have rarely had it get too hot. Wood stove heat

Yes, pipes are great. We got a 8" dia flex liner installed, and the draft is very strong. If the stove gets hot enough it sort of goes into thermal runaway where the draft gets so strong that it can draw too much air through every little crack and leaky gasket with the air vents shut.

Welders? Any welders on this site?

Looks good. They don't say much about the breaking strength, while JB often advertises it. I have used JB epoxy inside chainsaw engine ports.

Welders? Any welders on this site?

Bummer. AS far as returning it I have another coming to see if it has the same defects. I got this knowing it would likely have defects, but none severe enough to make it not work, so I'm ready to fix it and use it if need be. No sense in messing around with however many returns it takes to get...
