@cory Does that third egg still stand a chance of hatching, do you know? I suppose even if it does, the other two chicks will be bigger and stronger, and likely get more food because of it. Downward spiral in that case. The strongest has the best shot at survival.

Any time a product manufacturer or seller feels the need to boost the advertising with a claim like this one..."Plus, it looks super cool!"...my BS meter buzzes.

I never felled in truly cold conditions. Some times in the low teens, but not much below that. Never had a wedge shatter, nor have I heard of it either...not to say it hasn't, by any stretch. Remember the old trick scattering a bit of gritty soil or saw chips between stacked wedges to help...

The flat washer will be on the end of the stem. Pull them out and look for a replacement when you have one in hand. Unless you see scratches or dings on the plate the washer seats on or tightens against, just try new washers. Or wait until Mike chimes in with his advice...likely to be better...
