Okay, so I'm not a climber but I do try to use chaps whenever using a saw but they sure are hot! Great when it's cold outside - not so great otherwise...
For you guys who wear pants climbing, why bother to switch to chaps on the ground? I was thinking about trying pants but maybe they're...
Well the first year we helped out up there we had several close calls because of lack of training and lack of safety gear. So we decided that if we wanted to be able to continue with the project we needed to step up the safety - a lot!
We now have enough chaps and forestry type helmets for...
When the men’s group from our church was cutting firewood for a youth camp this fall we were pleasantly surprised by having freshly baked sticky buns and coffee delivered to us on the back of the camp Kubota. SWEET!
Okay here's our latest project...
My son had a large oak professionally taken down leaving us a fair amount of firewood. We just needed to do a bit of blocking and splitting...
Well I grew up in maple syrup county and in fact lived almost right next to one of the largest single producers in the country. They tapped thousands of trees each spring and actually used modified chainsaws that had drill chucks threaded on where the clutch would normally attach to drill the...
Yeah, I left that on the table for the guy.
If he still couldn't find anyone before winter sets in, we could give that a try and then he could get a pro to come over in spring and clean things up.
Well, I guess I'll give that a try and see how it works... The trouble is, I probably wouldn't be able to find out if I managed to get it right until I get back to the area where I ran into the problem.
The elm and maple around my place don't fight back like that.;)
Thanks for all the advice...
Hi Ray,
I'm pretty happy right on the ground...Never really cared much for that tower work either. lol
You're right about wanting to help out a friend and without having you guys around for advice I probably would have just jumped right in.
I did look in Craigs list and there are several...
Hi Chris,
"Your background climbing towers SHOULD give you the basics about solid anchors and rope angles and all that."
Actually, not so much...
The main safety concern when doing tower work (at least at the non-professional level) is simply fall prevention which means making sure that you...
Okay here's a link to a short video of the tree in question. I haven't been over to look at it in person - Just going on what my I've been told. He thought it was up about 23 feet - in looking at the video again it might not be that high. What do you guys think?

Well I do have a pneumatic launcher (again originally for ham radio use) that could easily get a line up into the tree. I've used that several times already for that purpose to pull smaller trees against the lean when close to a building.
Your description of the way the belay line would be used...
Well, part of the problem is that they're getting into crunch time as far as winter approaching here in WI. I actually had to try to find a company to come in to take down a large oak for my son about a month ago and some of the companys were already turning away calls (not even taking calls -...
Hi Burnham,
No, I do not know any climbers.
It seems pretty simple but then again (as you state at the bottom of every post)... I'm sure that I do not fully understand the situation...
Well I know that the limb usually falls down and knocks the ladder over...don't ask how I know that...:O
But I would no longer be standing on the ladder at the point where the branch would need to be cut I would be standing on a lower branch - and could easily put a line around the tree at that...
Okay so I'm not an arborist - nor do I have any desire to launch into a new career - but...
A good friend has a partially snapped off limb on a large maple up about 25 feet or so. He has tried to get a professional to give him an estimate but since it's such a small job he has not been able to...
