How do paved driveways tolerated falling trees?

My best anti damage experience was when a guy hired me to fall a fairly large tree from the edge of a shrine grounds into a parking lot, a low fence in-between. He's a construction worker. When I was pondering removing the fence, he said he would put an old pipe scaffolding over the fence wide...

    Cable core test

I wonder if you could get more cut resistance from a higher performance type wire rope core, or stainless. Stainless has considerably higher breaking strength that regular steel, but how would that translate to cut resistance? Cut resistant textiles like for butcher's gloves and whatnot...

    The Crushing Of The Blaster

Forty years ago or longer, my neighbor had his foot clipped by a backhoe, a crushing injury that cut deeply into his foot just below the ankle. He was in the hospital for a whole year trying to recover. The doctor wanted to remove his foot above the ankle, but he was adamant about keeping it...

    Gaffless Palm Climbers

The vid you mentioned, Stephen. He also carries a stick with him when using climb line methods, using it for his perch when topping, etc. An ancient method. The guy has a personal policy about not using gaffs, even for removals. Nice guy super climber. <iframe width="560" height="315"...

    Homemade Charcoal

Charcoal is made from bamboo as well. It has a number of practical uses, like for purifying air and water. It will help keep vegetables longer when kept with them in the fridge. The porosity acts as an absorbent. When made from green bamboo, the water can get collected and it has uses for...

    Homemade Charcoal

Good lesson, cool thread! I used to know a guy that was a charcoal making fool, including the more difficult real hard type binchotan charcoal that keeps it's heat longer, before turning to ash. It's the stuff that the yakitori restaurants use. He had a way of making regular charcoal where...

    More Power Needed

One thing about a chainsaw mill that doesn't often get mentioned, is that you can carry it to the location of a tree. A band mill or some other larger device may not afford that opportunity. I've milled some boards that were valuable enough to carry a distance one at a time.

    Homemade port a wrap

Judging by what I see at a welders place close by, fabricators working in stainless have all kinds of bits and pieces of scraps that are left over from jobs. Especially pipes, ideal for making port a wraps and whatever.

    What's a handshake worth ?

More people need to know the story of General Nogi during the meiji era in Japan... When the samurai's were losing their positions of respect and prominence as more foreign influence came to acceptance in the country, the general and some other warriors started a rebellion to try to maintain...
