If the hive goes horizontal, they can often drown in the honey I was told. So best to keep them upright. the one I did we had to lay on it's side. We went slow about it and they survived just fine. It was towards winters end, so there was probably less honey in the hive was our guess.
Last nest in a hollow I dealt with, I put some screen over the nest holes and pruned the tree. They weren't happy wit me... But I let them out after I was done. :D
