That's how they spin it anyway but when OSHA gets involved they tell you that safety meetings are your responsibility. It can be a bit shifty. The employee is technically not yours but works for someone else but yet you're responsible for the safety meetings. Actually I'm confused because of a...
I don't have the capital it would take to pay the workers comp in advance like they want it in Oregon. I would have to pay in advance one dollar for every three dollars that I spent on payroll the previous year. Temp service takes care of workers comp and all of the record keeping and taxes that...
Aug is fine, "Augie" puts me into some sort of pre-murder mindset (not really but for sake of explanation through hyperbole). I'm not telling you not to call me Augie, I'm just saying that you should reserve it for those times when you want to annoy me. : )
No, I don't get my guys through the...
I might like the time clock idea, not so much for him but for a certain climber who consistently rounds up. As far the ground man goes. . . I'm reasonably certain that he can't read at all which makes some of the "responsible" stuff in life harder.
Additionally, I've never made anyone stop the...
That's almost always true.
Another thing that's usually true that I've noticed.
Not always!
But the best ground men are usually climbers. They have more of the big picture about what's going on and can anticipate the next move.
He costs me $25 per hour right now over the table. This isn't exactly the most booming economy around here. If I pay him $25 per hour over the table, that will equate to $40 per hour. I could justify it if it was just me and him on the job each day because I would be safeguarding efficiency, not...
I started off the post by saying he's getting a raise. Just saying though, I couldn't expect him to lead a crew in other words, delegate. He doesn't delegate. He will definitely be the first ground man that I've ever paid more than $15 an hour to over the table. I've never heard of anyone else...
True, I detest having to go before the Monarch and request time off.
Having said that though, hard work consistently with a touch of frugality is one road to financial security.
Will do. I'll post back here when he has the raise too. This particular guy, I can't imagine as a climber though. I've tried putting him in leadership positions before but he's a head down, bulldozer type guy who will allow himself to be led by anyone which isn't what I'm looking for in a...
I have a ground man that has been on for five years. He's worthy of climber wages. I pay him $15 an hour which equates to almost $25 per hour at the temp service. I think I'm going to have to give him a raise soon. . .

Two things:
1. All my guys are through temp
2. Yogi Bera-ish comments are awesome.
I heard myself tell a friend of mine a while back that the best surprises are the ones you don't expect.

Wow that sounds like you have quite a tendency toward rescue/social work. I've definitely tried a little too hard to help people that weren't as interested in helping themselves as I was. I hope your hiring standards have become stricter since then.

With pressure from my insurance company and a little bit of handholding from me two of them got their licenses back. One of them is now in prison. This subject is triggering a lot of incidences and stories, I better get back to work.

That's a really good point. I forgot about that. A couple years back I became suspicious that the guys drivers licenses were no good just because they couldn't pay their phone bill etc. so I thought how is it that these guys could maintain a valid license? So I told them that my insurance...
"So if the man driving wedges is rough ‘round the edges, its ok, we don’t need to be Quakers
Having said all that, I’ll agree sober’s where it’s at, when dodging widow-makers
And speaking for me, I’m now free of the bottle and have conviction
That my brothers in the trees, if need be, can...
