Other than the magnifying glass on my head I don't use one to check and see how sharp my chains are. I used my scale/paycheck. . And what parts of me were the most beat up exhausted at the end of the day, week, month and season/year. . But Magnus is right. This thread isn't a pissing match...
Liked.
And the previous post by Jay.
In fact LOTS of excellent posts on here. . Including several by Magnus.
I don't want to go on a roll here so I'll just say that if your cutting softwood and your not taking your riders down at all until the cutters are half gone, well your chain...
A sharp chain isn't exactly the same as a good cutting chain. But any good cutting chain needs to be sharp. !
But for me, a sharp and good cutting chain is one that cuts the fastest with the least amount of effort on my saw handling. Meaning I don't have to pull like I'm in a tug o war or...
Since dull, wore out files are half the problem with guys hand fileing. Some of them think a file should last as long as a chain does.I'm gonna give the cider vinegar a try.
Really true!! Getting someone to get every tooth the same is ime the hardest part. Then they can improve 1 part at a time and get consistent at it. Pretty soon they have all the parts consistent and they have reliable cutting chains.
Not fully daylight yet. Sickle moon sliding sideways in the sky. It warmed up this morning. +22°f this morning. Makes for Slick highways. And I need to figure out what to wear to the woods today.
Glen. :)
I have done it with my GriGri also. But for descents I'm totally sold on the HH. None of the herky jerky I get when descending with the Gri Gri. . And it is nice to be able to take a seat and get the weight off my feet when waiting for my groundies to get whatever done.
The extra work of chisel fileing may not be worth it for many situations. Like Holmen said long bars and clean wood. Or. A long bar on a small saw. . I always ran 20" bars on my 242 , 44 Husky, 024+026/260 Stihls and chisel filed or ground my chains. It really maxized the small fast...
Maybe there were 2 dots over the O. Don't remember. I think Madsen's still carries them. They were the single best quality chisel bit files available. . Lasted 3 times as long as Valhalla chisel bit files.
When I started chisel grinding it took me a couple years to get as good grinding as...
That's always been my impression. !!!
I may be a fat old toad but I can still put 25,000-50,000 BD ft on the ground in 6 1/2 hours if the timber is there and the ground isn't nearly vertical.
If I had spent the last 20 years sitting in a cab pullin levers that would be impossible.
For an, in the woods touch up file I like the Oberg double end file the best. !!!!
On the jig I prefer the 3 corner chisel bit file. . But being older now I just grind them.
The wobbling into the cut is from not enough joint . With chisel grinders, if you use a cluster dresser and just gently buff the stone back into shape with a stone that finishes well. And then just slowly, gently "bump" the cutter thru its grinding cycle, you can get a very fine finish on...
I came up with a new way for me this summer. I choke the tree with a running bowline with my HH srt and grab the climb line and my flipline and flip them together. Makes for an inposition escape line if something goes wrong like a broken hand. Which I almost did this past summer. . For use...
One of the best things to help a guy get a sharp chair is good glasses or the right magnifier. .
Jed, when chisel fileing, do you push the file from the outside in or the inside out?? The proper way is outside to inside. With the chain tight on the bar. 2 hands on the file. Find your...
This is the trick! Twist the saw just right and even a hungry chain will bore. And KEEP YOUR THUMBS WRAPPED AROUND THE HANDLE BARS.
The loading up with chips and too many cutters in the wood are why some of us run full or semi skip chain. To tell the truth I have never really LIKED full...
Actually, it doesn't take much change in the shape of a cutting tooth th greatly affect how it cuts. When Oregon came out with the Dura Pro chain in the early 90s . Those of us that used it had to change our grinding and depth gauge settings from Oregon 75 CL,CK,or CJ. Same for the guys...
