Wish I could, but I don't think I've got the room/clearance in the canopy to bring the back leader all the way up and over into the fall the main leader took. (And that's the only direction I can go.)
I'll look at it for the 1000th time though. I've been executing the bind it/climb it plan for...
My TIP is the oak to the left in the pix. You can see some throwline in it. Maybe 8'-10' away? The one in between is too far/too short to be much help.
I was thinking of something similar, Peter, once I get the remaining left-hand leader down to a manageable size.
So it turns out that rather than spending tons of time & energy gearing up and spurring up the tree to set the binders, you could use this incredible invention called a LADDER. (I guess I didn't think of it before because they tend to be the stars of about 90% of tree fail videos...)
I wound...
I hear you, Butch, and I like that idea, Fiona. Thanks!
I'll go BACk to Lowe's (3rd trip this week!) and get another strap to figure 8 through the crotch. But that--coupled with a family hike this afternoon--probably puts this off for another week. Sure I'd rather git 'er done, but at the end...
Thanks, Tim! I'm definitely going to get an HH2 when funds allow. Saw that vid of Reg's when it came out; totally contributed to my sense that SRT is the way to go!
I am, sir! I'll send you a PM!
I survived! :D
Sure as shootin' didn't accomplish much though. Below is the sum total of my accomplishments! Got those set in the morning, prior to soccer...
When we came home, I ate lunch & spiked up to try and set a 3:1 above the top ratchet strap. THAT was a comedy of errors! It...

With the wise counsel HERE and HERE, I'm ready to rock tomorrow!
No worries, man! It's ALL helpful to me!
Thanks, Fi.
It IS a skill I plan to keep, but my goal is for "throwing in the towel" to be just a bit further down on my list of arborist abilities!
Love this idea, Peter. Thanks!
And I REALLY love this one!
Phew! "Echo Tough," I guess! ;)
Thanks, Sam. One of the things tree work is reminding me is that it shouldn't be my only workout. If I did it daily that would be one thing, but weekly/bimonthly just doesn't cut it. I've...
Thanks, guys!
I do have an extra throwline to be used if the whole shebang gets stuck. In this case, the bag (12oz) got trapped, but the girth hitch I had on it pulled through, so only the bag stayed in the tree. Then I switched to my 14oz. and hit my target using the original line.
The rat's...
Thanks, Bronc!
Congrats on the saw; I've read LOTS of good reports on the 355T. Was set to buy one before I found a 200T that "a little old lady had just driven to church on Sundays."
My main ground saw is an Echo CS-590. Love it.
I learned a LOT today--or at least was forced to ask some important questions.
First, though, I want you to bask in the Glory of My Arboreal Excellence. I hope this picture doesn't make anyone feel insecure about their skills...
In all seriousness, that took almost an hour to untangle...
Thanks, man. Move was definitely for the best. Not running from the law...yet! Just a great professional opportunity in a part of the country we love.
Work pictures did get a little "post-processing" for exposure, etc. Best thing about still shots is you can't see the shaking or smell the...
Thanks, guys!
In all the madness of the move, I never did tackle the ash that required the lift rental. Paying for it now, as one of the home inspectors for a prospective buyer noted "dead trees" as a concern. :(
