I was told by the inspector from Altec it has too much play. They allow 1/2" from center when pressure is put on the knuckle. Mine has about 5". After a closer look today, I believe it only needs to be tightened to the bull gear. Just too much play.

It's a 91, if I could get a rebuild kit I would. Altec wants $5917 for the gearbox and $563 for the motor. After the inspection last Wed, I'm looking at 18G in parts alone for an $18,000 truck. I could have got more reach on a newer chassis for 36G.

I just bought an older Altec LB 650. The price was right, but it needs a shit ton more work than I thought. Especially this gearbox that lists at $6,000. Any thoughts ?

A Simple valve adjustment on the four mix motors is all it takes. 15 min and under $5.

Can you dig and replant some of the nicer bushes? Or even better, sell them and recover your costs.

I have since added a spring to the mix which puts just enough tension on the pin you keep it down without making it hard to open. The gates do see some pressure with an overflowing load, but I haven't had any trouble with bending or opening during travel.

The winch line should be anchored like stated above. Either inside the cover or through the side of the spool and anchored there. If the bottom layers are loose, it will grab the tighter top layers. Pull it all out. If it's not anchored, it should be asap.

Once in a while mine will catch, but only after winching some heavy stuff. They must be really over working that winch. I also guided my winch line by hand the first time on. Not sure if that made any difference though. 200' max

Mine are just like this although not as high. I only have the two pins at the bottom and not the latch at the top.. My body is all alum.
