Wish I could send some water, Jim. Here it's hardly ever a question of getting rain, usually it's too much or not. Down south almost always too much. Typhoons be lining up out in the Pacific soon to start rolling in.

Rain smashed my spinach. Not an easy to grow crop I find, like other greens grow no problem. Corn coming to maturity, tomatoes turning red. Peppers and beans giving take homes. Giving away cucumbers.

Mick, what's the soil like in your area? It looks maybe sandy.

Question for Willie How often do you water those tomatoes? They don't seem to like water like other veggies.

Nice greenhouse, Stig. I remember a bad snowfall year when lots of those were crushed. It was a "Three Little Pigs"story. People weren't laughing anymore at the ones that built their houses sturdy. I don't have a house, but I put down black plastic sheeting to keep away the weeds. They sell...

Jim, your garden need not be barren, y'know that there are some types of Cactus that you can grow in cold winter climates.

Jim, how big a garden area do you need for your own personal vegetables? Can't you water?

Cucumbers seem very hearty, whether it's my area or they are all like that. They grow so darn fast. They must be aggressive feeders. They like a lot of water, like everyday.

My tomato plants are looking raucous. I have a netted bag full of dry chicken manure seeping in a big tub of water. I'm going to dilute it and water with it. I read it's a good idea. I have to hold my nose when I open the lid.

I think raised beds are a good way to go. Don't mess around with mother earth, dirt in a box is much easier to control and get it the way you want. Weird gardening year, I had to plant a number of types of seeds twice to get them to come up. I've got my eye on some pigeons hanging around...

Willie, he's going to leave you to take care of the weeds? :|: Does he plant only one corn variety? Not concerned about cross pollination if mixed? What's he do with all that produce?

Yeah, good point, planting seeds is easy, little calculation involved and not much fear of losing a finger or being maimed in other ways. I guess a gopher could bite your finger off by mistake, though. Anything else threatening living under ground? A little danger could add interest.

Yes, Jim, that is an element that already occurred to me, being more involved with the operation than just doing the tasks with no connection beyond that. Interesting to read you say about your mind being active. Repetitive work is a somewhat complex phenomenon. I've run up against it with...

Just south of me is a large agricultural region, at least large by our standards. A good friend of mine is heavily into ag, renting more and more properties that the elderly generation can no longer look after themselves. He can get the fields cheap now. I help him out from time to time. This...

Getting going.... rototilled some lime and composted chicken manure into my spot. Have to let it sit for awhile now to cool down, and it's still too early to plant much. Anybody working on theirs yet?

I thought I'd try growing a tea that people used to drink for health purposes in these parts, called Habucha. Mostly found in Asia or India I believe, but I saw someone in Bulgaria selling seeds on line, so I bought some. I think originally from India where he got them. I thought Japan customs...

Rich, what sized poly tunnel are you talking about? The polly tunnels I know are large enough to drive a tractor inside, generally closed on the ends as well. Those things absolutely cook inside, so hot and humid. I generally see at least a month to six weeks speed up until harvest when...

The nationwide agricultural enterprise here where the vast majority of growers take their crops to be auctioned for market, has such a high standard for acceptability. My neighbor used to grow cukes, but anything but straight ones within a certain size and without any blemishes, he couldn't...

May not be much to the out of season thing, but I have read some points about it. Crops getting shipped a distance have to be picked earlier when there are lower nutritional levels. It takes more effort to grow things out of season, so possibly more chemicals involved. What is available in...
