I Normally do a locking brummel in teh way you described nick.
How about i say use pictures 12 nad 13 to show how a locking brummel looks?
I have used the new england instructions on some Marlow D(ynemma)12. tough to invert but i got there

I always think a locking brummel looks really brutal on rope folding it back on itself but i'm sure its not.
