Wrenching on stuff, repairs, maintenance, tips and tricks

... a few things from Muir resonated now imprinted and integrated to this day ... one is mentioned in Brakes. He said "do a slow good job on your brakes , remember you have an eternity to get it right ... " (might not have quoted exactly)

    Bang/Buck Rigging Rope?

Knot in the line that has been loaded and seems impossible to break ... Been there but try to avoid it ever happening. All the usual tools plus patience can help , reach for the knife last after admitting defeat. The Overhand Knot and Figure Eight are the two worst ...

    Bang/Buck Rigging Rope?

To rig for a roll Chain is better ... (I would never put that hard ofa bight on wire rope)

    Bang/Buck Rigging Rope?

That old chain is a beautiful thing !! ... I'd leave it original and use it for vehicle recovery. Real logging Chokers have a beefier tighter Slip hook that just passes the chain through and doesn't come out. Two sizes as well , I have a few of the smaller diameter (though both sizes are...

    Bang/Buck Rigging Rope?

My heavy is 5/8 Stable Braid , has taken alot of use , even abuse and still works ... Have 3/4 three strand New England Rope , really only goes out on occasion. Heavy and Knots take extra time.

Wrenching on stuff, repairs, maintenance, tips and tricks

Muir's story is a great one , the book is a masterpiece. Drawings included , who the hell ever thought old black and whites with arrows was the way to go for shop manuals , John knew a good drawing was superior .... he was turned down by something like seventeen major publishers. Self...

Wrenching on stuff, repairs, maintenance, tips and tricks

Spent years with John Muir's "Idiots Guide" though that book can get one into trouble , overall a great learning tool. Old School he was , includes stuff like filing ignition points in an emergency ... turning lug nuts (or any nut) without a wrench in an emergency

What are you using for SRT and why?

Hardware store small diameter round Steel stock , I put a grip (fuel line) and small hook eye on one end , the other end bent into a rope grabber that also fits through the upper holes on the handle ascender.

What are you using for SRT and why?

I'm the odd member out I guess , do almost everything on single line. Have ankle ascender and homemade knee ascender that I never use. Use a HH with a handled ascender above. Tail goes back through small pulley on the handle and have a piece of Smith rod probably three foot that usually gets...

I did have one of those but sold it because it had the chip instead of hi lo screws. Never needed high idle starts. I do remember up was choke down to run (which had high idle) until you throttled. All the way down (springed momentary) for off. My guess is if need high idle start on warm saw ...
