    I actually would feel much better about that failure, knowing it was not bad material, but rather bad installation of the swage. Poor quality cable you cannot fix...poor quality assembly, you can.

The forecast is interpolated from data from a weather monitoring station at a local airfield just 5 air miles away, as well as broader geographic...

    That may well be so, but even a high-quality rope of too small dimension and/or load capacity could fairly easily be outmatched by that tree.

    That was a whole lotta tree. With that much weight, and perhaps some internal rot (?), maybe no reasonable hinge would have held up to the sudden shift of weight to the back cut. Obviously a much stouter pull rope was in order. For true, dumping that monster onto a road is an odd choice as well.
