My mistake Mick. It was Scott who used Shetland ponies on his expedition not Shackleton.
A few years earlier then Scott's expedition Ernest Shackleton missed the south pole by 97 miles.His 3 man team were unmatched in toughness as they pulled their sledges by hand for 17 weeks up and down the uneven glacial terrain and made it back to England.

Shackleton's book was an amazing read. The trip from Elephant island to south Georgia was epic. Not to mention the fact that Wild had to stay behind and tend the rest of the crew.

Amazing people.
