Couple summers ago I was in Italy, hiking around in some brushy backcountry, I bumped into 3 twelve or thirteen y.o. kids and their big dog, they were out there herding sheep. It looked like quite the rustic life for sure, doing it the same way as 200 years ago it seemed.

My wife used to do that for some years when she as a young girl.
Go up in the mountains with a bunch of sheep.
Told me that after a such summer spent all alone, it was really hard getting used to being around other people again.

Probably boredom and wanting to leave their mark on the countryside.
Could have been navigational purposes too.
This whole country used to be covered in sheep.
The Miller's and the Kuhr's used to have enough folks to field three baseball teams a piece. Especially during haying season.
They would take a break at lunch and play.
Lots of herders. I have the remnants of a sheep herder's wagon in the iron pile.
Years and years ago the govt made up a rule that the wagons had to have hard covers. Poor herders would overheat in the summer and sleep underneath the dang thing.
