The average regional pilot makes less than some groundies, Ed... just about $12.50 per hour.

Average shorthaul pilot in UK makes £40 - £50k per annum plus benefits. I think you start on about £30k.
A friend of ours is a time served ex royal air force pilot (flew a10 thunderbolts on secondment to USAF among other things), and he was on £80k a year doing the Australia run.

I think it's utterly disgraceful to pay such skilled people so little

I assume that a lot of pilots love to fly. One reason that the wages may be so poor.

Same reason treeworkers are paid so low.

Add to that that a lot of companies have defaulted on their employees/pilots pensions and its even more messed up.
