Tie regrooving

The tire groover that I saw the crane op using, was cutting rather narrow grooves, on the order of 1/8" wide. Are grooves that narrow very effective? There was certainly a lot of extra rubber on those large tires.

The ones I saw back in the day only cut maybe 3/16" wide .With say racing slicks the tires were grooved to match track conditions .Any praticular sprint car might carry a dozen different tires .

That actually looks like fun. It does not look like it would make much of a traction tire though. Must be ways to cut sipes and blocks?

This one is similar to the one I mentioned I used earlier, you can get blades up to about 1/2".

All positions? Can you regroove and put on the steer axle?

Here in the US, all positions can be regrooved.

It is mainly done for over the road trucks to get another 20-30K of tire life.
Once regrooved the casing is to thin to use for recaps.

Seems to be the current thinking on the practice. http://fleetowner.com/equipment/tiretracks/fleet_resist_temptation

I think in our trade, regrooving would serve little help. We need more traction than most OTR trucks.

Typical fascinating thread here at TH. Thanks.
