I might fire it up for a tank of fuel every so often, but I couldn't go without av either. My first poulanpro didn't have av. No problems when I first got it, but after awhile, I'd really feel it after running it a bit. Fingers would buzz for an hour or two afterward. Probably not a huge deal...

Is that a chain brake, or just a hand guard? When did they start putting brakes on saws?
