I hate having a dull axe. So I bent up a piece of UHMW plastic blade cover for for mine. Doesn't get in the way of the heal, is easy to take off when needing the edge. Then I can still stuff the axe in the back of my work belt and worry about falling and getting cut. :)

Axe hung on lanyard tied by the head would be my vote. Well it better for weighting a pound more and being 2cc's larger. :P
