I once tried to race someone felling pines with a bowsaw, and he had an ax. The ax won by a long shot, though in my defence the bowsaw wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. I think Axes are only worth while in soft wood, but I stand to be corrected.

The Axe was the first tool to turn trees into something useful . And it will be the last .
As long as humans have oposing thumbs and fingers . Some guy will be using an axe somewhere
