You can blur things or sharpen things.

When shooting a tree, you can keep the entire tree in focus without having the edges converge towards the top.

I am not a fan of filters - I would prefer to drop the Fstop for more depth of field and bokeh (blur). Cool thing with the T n S is that it seems you can have a sharp depth of field from near to infinity, even with a higher Fstop.

But... I am just talking as I have never used the tilt n shift lense. It seems like the ticket for taking tree pics. I'll rent one in the next week or so and post up my results.
 
IN traditional landscape images, the entire scene is rendered in focus using small apertures. With the Shift tilt mechanism, this can be done without this. Or the other way a very precise DoP can be created. It's very organic when you use it, the sweet spot of focus just jumps into your hands in a very controllable way. S&T lenses can be very er..gimmicky,which is OK, but also equally create effects that would be hard to create otherwise.
