Just picked this up scored cylinder. So I'll go thought it and clean it up. Any one know how to fix that brown spot on the oil tank?

I'm wondering if he means the recoil. Looks like there's some kind of dark bar on top of that.
 
I'd go stronger on a sticker. Soaking in water may help soften it, but carb cleaner or similar solvent might be the way to go. Just test inside the clutch cover to be sure what you use will not remove the paint. I have cleaned pine sap off saws with rubbing alcohol with great results, but it seems weak or useless on stickers.

The key for good pictures is light. Take pics or your saw under your brightest light, and with flash, while holding the camera/phone very steady. sometimes using a 2 second delay feature helps remove the shake from tapping the picture button. Of course outside in sunlight will make the most crisp pictures.
 
Zippo fluid is good for stickers. Works on paper too. An acquaintance that owned a vintage bookshop turned me on to that. He used it to remove gummies from old books without harm.

More work on it now time to get the aluminum transfer off

Plain old WD40 is great for cleaning stuff like that too. Not a great tool/ machine lubricant but it’s a great cleaner and solvent. Usually fine for painted surfaces.

Looks clean, did someone put straight gas in it?
 
I would probably go with a new piston, definitely new rings. A small piece of green Scotch bright pad on a dremel might get the aluminum transfer off the cylinder. Thoroughly clean the cylinder afterward with soap & water and even carb cleaner or some solvent to dissolve any burnt on oil buildup that could have Scotch bright particles stuck to it as they may wok loose and score the cylinder.

Yes lean run they said the carb was old and caused a lean run
 
If it’s a light seize you can clean up the piston and bore and throw on a new set of rings and most likely be good to go

How dose it look I just had one faint line from where it was hit with transfer

Change the seals now as you have it down in parts anyway.
Is it scored all around or just by exoust?
This is heat scooring. Could very well be from lean running but not becurse carb is old.
Could also be over loaded...
Could be defect membranes or gaskets, but defect carbs is not really common.
I run saws here with 60+ year old carbs....
 
The 660 with comparison to the older 066 has a more restrictive muffler .If you add that to possibly a seal leak,carb tuned too lean or low oil ratio fuel mix ( 50 to one ) you take a good chance of a scorched piston .
A 660 is too nice of a saw to mess with aftermarket parts ,exception being perhaps a Meteor piston with Caber rings .Use OEM seals,rebuild the carb and use no less than 40 to one oil/gas mixture (I use 32 to one ).
Do that and tune a tad on the rich side it might last another 30-40 years .BTW as has been said already the age of a carb has nothing to do with anything but after a period of time they may need a rebuild .

The piston was scored around the exhaust only. The carb was never rebuilt as far as I know. I put a carb kit in since it was out. Suffered a set back my piston arrived broke. The ring was broken during shipping. They just shipped the box in a plastic bag no protection. Not sure if I can still trust this piston dissent have a hair line crack
 
Was it after market piston on internet buy?
Contact them. Say what you are worried about and ask if they have any good solusion.

I order a lot of stuff supplied my mail. Here it is pretty rare I see any shipping damages.
If it got busted in box with piston that had to have shown on the box.

I did in the coming days it should be resolved. It was a stihl part I don't like aftermarket much. Yes the box was squished I'll post pics the box was just a store box it wasn't ment to be shipped in that box
 
I get a lot of pistons in store boxes. A bit paper around piston and a bit extra in top if needed. Plastic all around.
I guess they could be damaged, but I had luck so far. No squished boxes even.

Shipping to US you need to make sure you can drop it from third floor or from a truck running 100 miles per hour in river!
I had many issues shipping to and from US.
I often send photos to receiver when packing, as its packed and posted. Several times they get there in other boxes, not packed well.

If ring is mounted and you are going to break it were it sit in the box, you really need to try very hard.
It would leave marks on piston as well as a lot more damage to box and bag.
I seen a lot worse without damages.
