Hmm, it might get better MPG than mine in my avatar (which gets 8-10), unloaded at least. 9klb instead of 13k and taller tires gear it higher...but they can also run on (free) waste oil.

That's better than I imagined...I thought you'd posted 6 mpg for yours, and for some reason I expected the rear steering setup would have more friction and thus be more fuel consumptive.

I also note, you did write "might"...:D.

"Free" waste oil is not something one finds handily available here in my part of the world.

We have to pay to get rid of it

Sure, lock it to limit movement. But there has to be more friction with the steering capability, even locked...has to be. Or maybe I'm completely wrong...you would know far better than I, David. I'm just armchair speculating here. I'll await your reply.

I also suspect you have access to amounts of waste oil far beyond what most of us do, given your business. A great benefit in putting those awesome rigs to work. And again, I may be wrong. But I hope you will clue me in :).

If the tires are pointed straight, there’s no drag. I suppose a couple hp drag if the hydraulic pump is pumping all the time. Would depend if I made it PTO or engine powered…I have a belt driven pump I could use but it also has a clutch like an AC compressor so it can be turned off.

We don’t generate a ton, mostly from rebuilding hydraulic cylinders and fixing tanks. Then the drain oil from oil changes in our trucks. But it’s around. Oil change places, etc. even restaurant fry grease. Big truck oil change places probably generate a lot. My engine uses gallons of oil.

Lots of shops around here use waste oil heaters. Quite a bit of maintenance that you have to do yourself, but it seems to be worth it.

They take small amounts of oil back here, anyplace that sells oil. When oil is high they will pay money for waste oil.
