so i tried to install my ring and ring from the ground for the first time the other day, and ended up giving up and just using my rope sleeve instead. i got it up in the tree where i wanted it but when i went to pull my rope thru it kept getting stuck. I was trying to pull the sliced end thru, and it was getting stuck on the small ring.

Should i have been trying to pull the non spliced side of my rope thru the large ring? I had it girth hitched to my throw line with a series of half hitches right up to the spliced eye. Or maybe i had the saver adjusted to large? the rings were almost touching when up in the tree.

If it's not strictly necessary, don't worry about installing one. I keep a retrievable on my harness most of the time so I can reposition my TIP when I need to, but it's pretty rare that I try to drag extra crap up the throwline. All the time it takes to fiddle about with all the extra bullshit, I could be aloft.

yea i guess ill stick to using my sleeve when setting it from the ground, super simple

for climbing i would never do it. i do have a rigging cambium saver that i use a couple of times a year and never have a problem getting the rope to pass through but i do use it with s splice. it is fiddly but also satisfying :)

man if i didnt use a friction saver of some sort my ropes would get trashed quick fast and in a hurry. I got a 90ft hank of some kind of 12 strand line in a mystery box that ill use if i really dont wanna bother, but my main rope/ropes are 24 strand. we got some rough bark down here. my dan hausser sleeve is great tho, just slides over the rope i throw a slipknot in my rope and pull it out once its over my TIP, but after using my ring to ring ill say it definitely doesnt save as much friction

I used Anaconda brand liquid-tight flexible conduit pre-srs, years ago to make up Dan House style cambium savers. One was four feet long for mrs over redwood branches which were still about 2 1/2 ft día at ninety feet up the tree. Early days it was frogging up with Jumar ascenders borrowed from the local CCCC ( Commander Cody Caving Club)…

I've got a dan house saver too, hasn't been touched in a year. Like @SeanKroll says, SRT don't really chew up rope. Also, the local oak species are very rope friendly.
lol yea I have basically speedran thru the climbing progression so I have a Dan hauser and a copy of Dan hauser tha was half the price from Arbsession, and an adjustable ring to ring I made up myself, I will always go SRT first unless I’m spiking up but my trees are very very wide so quite often I set multiple lines and I currently only have 1 rope wrench. So second line is still DRT for now.
