I have a couple large (30-36” dbh) trees on the property where large sections of the canopy came down during storms. One is a cherry and one is an American beech. The canopy sections were hollow and full of carpenter ants. If the tops look like this, is it fair to assume the trunks look like this also? Does the hollowing always start at/around ground level and work it’s way up?

I think he's asking if the tops have hollows and ants, is it safe to assume the bottoms will be(have a high probability of being) in similar condition? BTW, I know this guy. He the one I climbed with a couple weeks ago. Welcome!

Thank you all for the responses and welcomes. I’ll experiment with the mallet and drill bit (have both) methods. Interested to see how it turns out. Thanks again!

Good deal. You'll learn and if you take some pictures and share it, some of us might learn with you. Good luck. And if we're lucky we'll get a good derail out of it and have a good time in the meantime.
