Had some interesting wood in the band saw today. 4500 year old bog Oak. Some 20 years ago They dug up a log in a local bog. I milled it into boards for the finder and kept half the boards as payment. Gave 2 blocks to a friend, who makes knifes. He came by with them today and asked me to run them...

My male apprentice is getting married next week. Has no money, so they have agreed on no rings. Then he got inspired by the wooden rings, I made when I married the mail order bride. He is slowly, under my tutelage, turning into a wood turner. So I did a ring turning seminar for him, and he...

Like these, you mean? I made those because my wife asked, as a joke, if I was going to give her a ring, when we married. They would be safe for work, as they break before the finger does. Made of Boxwood. The box is made out of 4000 year old Ancient Kauri from New Zealand. Terri ( Mrs. B) has a...

    Wood Turning

My new apprentice is getting married next month. She can't wear her wedding ring at work and things like that have a tendency to disappear if you just take them off and leave them by the bathroom sink. So I resurrected my old ring box design and made one for her.

Archeologists have found charring in postholes under Viking dvellings. Of course, the remains of wood in those holes was all that is left. Look up "Trelleborg"

Something every young woman should have handy to bash guys who don't understand "No" over the head with.

    Wood Turning

I figured the young woman who logged with me this summer and cut some really large beech trees on Island Møn would like something made from one of the trees, she cut. So I made a pair of candlesticks for her.

When I had that young woman, Anna, out logging with me last year, I cut a chunk out of a tree she felled and dried it. I was going to make her a candlestick, but she got pregnant, so a baby rattle seemed a better choice.

Still somewhat crippled but feeling is almost normal. Good enough that I don't notice it anymore. Squished my thumb between a chunk of wood and the splitter yesterday. Sure felt that.

When we were logging the last dinosaur ash trees in a castle forest on island Møn in 2018, there was a burl on one tree. 800 pds ( The guy who got it had it weighed). We had a climber go up and cut it off or it would have been buried when the tree fell. I gave it all to a woodturning buddy...

You could probably get a fine 20 cm bowl out of it, if it hasn't cracked too badly during drying. Find a local turner and commission her/him to do it.

I cut a side off a buttress on a large maple log in winter. It had a LOT of ripple. I was going to give it to a woodturning buddy, but the apprentice was so awed by it, that I ended up making him a bowl from it instead. Just another run of the mill salad bowl, but a nice piece of wood.

It is too thick for that, but it is no problem to turn one thin enough.

I finished up one of the rough turned bowls from post 399 and gave it to the apprentice today. Nice piece of wood.
