My red one (over a well head in the pic) is a 2nd hand brute I got 4(?) yrs ago. Perhaps the older ones were more resilient to cold as mine deals with freezing temps fine. Dropped a small tree on it last year (saved a small planting) and it popped back to shape. Maybe a diff model or something...

Pulled the back leaning maple into another tree with the mini (to hang off a block).

Don’t have a copy to directly quote but it’s talked about in Fundamentals, I think the section talking about mismatched cuts etc and how they affect the direction. Trees being pulled to the high side...

But I can make that cut... And I’m certainly not a huge guy. A big part of getting smarter is continuing to learn and accepting when one is incorrect.

Read through the whizzy thread and see that folks found gutting the hinge helped trees pull even better.

Nice to be in the same sentence with Stig and Rico when it comes to hinges! I’m years behind them in skill but work towards perfect cuts which both have obviously done for decades. As to your harping on the uneven back cut I pointed out, don’t know why I have to spell it out but fine: Sloppy...

What money one makes doesn’t equal their skill in a trade, you are a great example. We had a substantial job a couple months ago that went super smooth and done in less time than expected, made good money and left the site better than written in the estimate. I asked the client what another...

Looks like the sizwheel engaged well, did what you wanted and the little dutchman probably helped too. What I am looking at is an advanced cut without proper application of the basics. Trees get pulled to the high side of an uneven back cut, so why put that opposite the way you want it to pull?

It’s just two bored wedges under that one. Didn’t want a double stack to spit out as it was a back leaner over the road. Had a rope on it too...

No boy-scout here daniel, just because you take every chance you get to pull out outlier cuts (poorly executed I may add) doesn’t make you good or ballsy. I’ll rarely pull out a dutchman or sizewheel but this example did not need a fancy cut to get it down safely.
