I would have checked the backcut more, he seemed to focus on the one side, pound a few times and then check the progress made up in the tree, seemed he missed that. I have no idea on what the hinge looked like, can't comment on that.
I've lost bids on removing a tree or limb off roofs, I explain it's going to take a bit more time to secure the tree before I go cutting, it's very likely the tree will upright itself once some weight is taken off or a large limb might go rolling off uncontrolled and do more damage, or worse...
