If the vertical fibers where the hinge is located are perfectly in line with (by that I mean parallel to) the saw bar as you bore, then there are no fibers of the hinge that are cut by the chain, or not enough to matter at all. So, in that case the bore method works as well as the axe method...

The downside to the bored gap is that you almost always will be severing some of the fibers of the hinge. Depending on how the grain runs, it might be negligible, or it might be significant. “smack it out with the axe” gap...I like it! That method usually avoids this risk.

Since you don't care, and you get nothing but silence or ridicule when you post anything here regarding tree work...might it not perhaps register that you'd be happier if you refrained from posting?

Really? Out of all the possible members here that you might address by name, you specifically ask me for comment. Daniel, you truly are a mixed up human being...you obviously cannot even begin to see the craziness you carry around, and express frequently for all of us to see. The tree work...

You know @murphy4trees...it is a very curious thing, that you go out of your way to beg me to comment on your work, while holding my experience, knowledge, and skills in such disregard. Why do you do that? Also, perhaps you have failed to notice that it is only you with whom I "don't engage on...

I will just note that at the same time Mr. Murphy derides the idea of gutting a hinge at eye height...he posts a picture of himself on a magazine cover showing a hinge he gutted at eye height :).

Recall my age :D. Just did a goggle search...I am surprised at the date of origin (1976). I do not know why, but I cannot recall any awareness of this group before about 2000 or so. My bad.

That will be both a difficult challenge, and a superb objective. Back when the first version of S-212 hit, about 1987 if I had to take an educated guess, USFS employees were running chainaws (and crosscuts, too) with no formal training, and often no informal training. Accident rates were...

Thanks, and don't apologize...not too long at all. Great info, and properly updated...since my retirement in 2012 I have paid little attention to this evolution. S-212 has been one of the few really top quality sawyer training programs for about 35 years. And it was fully developed within the...

But...but...but...the treeman god Daniel Murphy said unequivocally that it was not a debatable point. Thus, how can this be questioned, I ask you??? I suppose it might barely possibly happen, that there be true fools that walk this planet, and don't know that they are. :/:
